The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP has done what many might call shocking, as they have appointed witch doctors to aid them fight human trafficking, these witch doctors are also perpetrators of the act of trafficking humans outside the country so one wonders how this method might be
effective in the fight against human trafficking. Well, according to the The Director General of NAPTIP, Ms Julie Okah-Donli she said that when they told what most people who are trafficked abroad go through, they could not believe it and sort of felt sympathetic.
“When we gathered these witch doctors recently to sensitize them on what human trafficking victims go through in Europe, they were shocked. And they have made their commitments to work with us to fight the menace of human trafficking.”She later went on to explain witch doctors role in human trafficking, according to her the victim who is to be trafficked is taking to a shrine where she swears an Oath of secrecy and various rituals are then performed on the person. This victim is then bound to the Oath and has to comply with who ever has sent the person outside the country.
“In spite of the rituals and oath taking, the victim reaches the destination point only to realize the farce behind the earlier sweet promises of a greener pasture. And in this circumstance, such person is told in strict terms not to renege on the oath of secrecy as it cannot be reversed,” the NAPTIP DG said. From my standing point, With all these said, the witch doctors are perpetrators and rather than making them ambassadors of a crime they commit, why not arrest them? Imagine a thief being made an ambassador by an Anti-Robbery unit? well maybe they have something up their sleeves.
