Helen Ozor |
EP caught up with the gorgeous top event blogger (CEO of Helen Events Blog) and social media connoisseur Helen Ozor and had a chat about herself and how it all started. Read below the interview as you don't want to miss out on this.
EP: How did blogging start for you?
Helen: I started blogging while still in the University. When i was in 200 level, a friend introduced me to modeling and i did that all the way until 400 level . I spent most weekends and sometimes weekdays in Lagos because there were jobs to do. So in 400 level i decided to take a break because i was almost in my final year and i needed to focus on school work. So one day, a friend called to find out what i had been upto.. i told him i was just in school and that i had stopped ushering jobs and all of that.. he then suggested that i start blogging. I did my research after a few months, i started my blog.

EP: When did you realize that blogging would be a career for you?
Helen: When i noticed what Uche Pedro of Bellanaija had built her brand to become and the very first time i was paid for a blog post.
EP: Have you had any controversial post in the past, and if any, which was the most controversial?
Helen: I've had about 3 controversial posts. Two of the posts involved Nollywood actresses and another one involved a political figure.
EP: You are one of the few event bloggers in Nigeria, how did you arrive at that decision to focus on that area?
Helen: I kicked off blogging publishing general stories until i realized that focusing on a niche was more better. So i picked a niche that i am most familiar with which was events. It wasn't easy switching but it's been worth it.
EP: How do you handle negative criticism?
Helen: I don't dwell on it for too long. I try not to make it get to me. I learn from the feed backs and trash whatever comments that will make me feel terrible. In this business you have to develop a thick skin.
EP: At what point did you start making money from your blog?
Helen: I started making money two years after i started. I was paid 5,000 for a sponsored post. 5k was big money then.
EP: Did you ever have it in mind that you would be one of Nigeria’s top bloggers someday?
Helen: At the time i started, No as time went on and with the level of work, time and how dedicated i was... people noticed my brand and started paying attention to me. So the feed backs, media interviews, enquiries, payments etc made me at some point realize that my brand would be big.
EP: You used to blog about entertainment, what made you decide to focus on events?
Helen: I got tired of doing the same thing. There was nothing new or creative about blogging entertainment. Entertainment Bloggers were doing the same thing. I got tired and i switched.
EP: You normally come across a lot of celebrities at events, recently you met with Don Jazzy. How was it like seeing him in person?
Helen Ozor and Don Jazzy at an event |
Helen: It was awesome.. i had a good time chatting with him and my first time experience was amazing.
EP: You are known to be controversial free, how do you manage to keep such profile even when you are on the spotlight?
Helen: For me, i believe that you do not have to intentionally bring someone down for you to be noticed. I've been controversy free for a very long time and that's because I'm a peaceful person.. i look up to someone like Dakore Egbuson Akande. She's in the spotlight, she's making so much money and she is very controversy free.
EP: There is this little game we are going to play where I ask you a question about my blog and you give a random answer. What year do you think EP started as a blog?
Helen: Let me guess.. 2016 ?
EP: So close, EP started in 2015, i was in my finals in school back then, guess we have that in common 😁, thank you so much for granting this interview.
