December 19, 2020

The Nigerian government has given an instruction to network providers to block any line who fails to link their  National Identity Number (NIN) to their SIM. This information brought a lot of concerns as it seemed we had to be physically present at a network providers outlet or office before the linking can be done.

Thankfully, network providers have provided an easy way to perform this linking using USSD codes or by sending a message in a particular format.

This post aims at showing you how this linking can be done. Remember this can only be done if you already have your NIN. If you do not, then you have to get your NIN from an NIMC office close to you.

MTN subscribers: If you are using MTN, simply dial *785#Your NIN# from the phone number you wish to link. You can also check your status to determine of the number has been linked by dialing *346# on your phone.

Airtel subcribers: For Airtel subscribers, simply dial *121*1#. You will then be prompted to insert your NIN number, Do so and submit. Once that is done you will get a success message. If you do not know your NIN number, simply dial *346#

THE NEW CONCEPT EGALITARIANISM AND WHY IT IS GAINING SO MUCH ATTENTION

January 05, 2020

Due to the inequalities suffered by woman in a rather patriarch and misogynistic society, women began a sort of reprisal to challenge their duties and view by the society and then gradually came up with a movement to tackle the marginalization that they suffered which led to the introduction of feminism a word coined by French philosopher Charles Fourier in 1837.

According to Wikipedia, "Feminism is a range of social movements, political movements, and ideologies that aim to define, establish, and achieve the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes".

According to our very own Chimamanda Adiche, "Feminist: a person who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes." Over time feminism took different meanings by different people, with some believing that feminism only favored whites, middle class and educated women which then led some people to identify as being a black feminist while others took a name called intersectional feminism.

Even extremist started getting created under feminism and they displayed total hatred for men with some even wishing death and suffering for their male counterparts. This led to a lot of controversies and a total flaw of the idea of feminism as the definition above suggested and drifted more into misandry which is the hatred for men and boys.

Due to this , a new trend has started which a some feminist are beginning to identify themselves with and it is called Egalitarianism, which is a concept that talks about the equality of sexes in a variety of areas, be it political, social etc.

According to Wikipedia, "Egalitarianism (from French égal, meaning 'equal'), or equalitarianism,[1][2] is a school of thought within political philosophy that prioritizes equality for all people.[3] Egalitarian doctrines are generally characterized by the idea that all humans are equal in fundamental worth or moral status.["

Although the term is currently trending, it is not a new word as it was first used in the 1880's. It is hard to some times determine what area of equality as it can sphere across a lot of areas that is why Egalitarianism is sometimes known as a protean idea.

HOW FUNMILAYO RANSOME KUTI EVICTED THE ALAKE OF EGBA LAND

January 04, 2020

Funmilayo Ransome Kuti was the mother of popular Nigerian musician and activist Fela Kuti. She was born on the 25th of October 1900. According to reports, It all started when the British government in 1918 had introduced a system of direct taxation and created the Sole Native Authority which was a form of indirect rule whereby the traditional rulers acted as agents for the colonial government to collect tax from women who traded.

One of the major issues that Funmliayo had with the Alake of Egba land was on taxation in which they provided as much as one-half of district revenues. Yet, they had no direct representation on the Sole Native Authority council, a situation they abhorred so much.

At times they got abused, beaten and even stripped naked when they try collecting taxes from them. At that time, Funmilayo was the head and founder of a women group known as the Abeokuta Women Union (AWU) and she took it upon herself to stand for the women and start a protest against their mistreatment. They considered the tax as foreign, unfair and excessive.

They also objected to the method of collection. This was the one issue which catapulted Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti into the political limelight, first in Abeokuta and then in Nigeria. Through the union, they opposed price controls and imposition of direct taxation, engaged in press campaigns and mobilized so much pressure against the Alake.

The Union group as well as Funmilayo organized mass protest against the issue of taxation and also demanded for the representation of women in local politics and governance. In 1946, the group sent a delegation to the Alake to present their demands but rather than assuage the pains of the women, the Alake went further to increase the taxation on the women.

According to reports in October 1946, about 1000 women protested to the palace of the Alake but the British police applied teargas on the women, beat them mercilessly and dispersed them from the palace.

The anti-tax protest was a long one with Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti at the head leading the women in the struggle. One of her protest which overwhelmed the Alake was one that lasted for up to 48h hours at the palace of the Alake and had over 10,000 women protesting the taxation and also demanded the release of their detained members.

By April in 1948, the women demanded for the removal of the Alake from his office. With her continuous protests coupled with series of letters calling for the removal and dethronement of the Alake of Egbaland, the king voluntarily decided to abdicate the throne of his forefathers and went into self-exile.

He remained that exile for one year until he returned to his throne in 1950 but by the time he was back as king, he did not make the mistake of challenging the women of Egbaland or their fearsome leader, Funmilayo Ransome Kuti.

In 1978, Funmilayo was thrown from a third-floor window of her son Fela’s compound, a commune known as the Kalakuta Republic, when it was stormed by one thousand armed military personnel. She lapsed into a coma in February of that year, and died on 13 April 1978, as a result of her injuries she sustained from the fall.

WESTERNERS AND TOURIST HAVE BEEN ASKED TO LEAVE THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

January 04, 2020

Westerners have be asked to leave the UAE and also Israel following the assassination of a high profile general Qasem Soleimani following orders from US president Donald Trump early Friday morning and also due to the heightened tension in the region due to the assassination.

On a BBC broadcast, Iranian Professor Seyed Mohammad Marandi, from the University of Tehran who is also a Military analyst, speaking to the BBC said:

“If I was a Western citizen I would leave the United Arab Emirates immediately. “Not only will Iranian leaders retaliate but also Iraqis will retaliate.

“The Americans have murdered Iraqi war heroes, this was a senior Iraqi government official. “The American position in Iraq is no longer sustainable and I think that the whole region is now a threat.”

“The whole region’s future is unclear because of the terrorist attack committed in Iraq. No matter how you frame it, it’s the equivalent of assassinating the British commander of the British armed forces.”

"This is essentially a declaration of war against Iran and they have a pretty wide menu from which to choose [as a form of retaliation]”

IRANIAN GENERAL QASSEM SULEIMANI KILLED BY AN AMERICAN DECISIVE ATTACK

January 03, 2020

Early hours on Friday morning, President Trump was reported to order an attack on Iranian general Qassem Sulaimani which killed the general and a close associate of his. The attack was an airstrike attack and was a retaliation to the killing of an American contractor in an Iraqi base which is alleged to be carried out by the militia group.

It was also alleged that the group were responsible for the attack of a US embassy in Baghdad by a mob of PMF militants and their supporters. A statement from Pentagon claimed responsibility for the strike and accused the Quds Force of being responsible for the deaths of hundreds of US service members and the wounding of thousands more.

General Suleimani is considered to be the second most powerful man in Iran. The US has deployed about 750 deployed 750 airborne troops to Kuwait as a rapid reaction force available for use in Iraq, and officials has said up to 3,000 could be sent in the coming days.

The US feel that more attacks are expected and it is their duty to take preemptive measures of defense in other to prevent these attacks. Trump, who ordered the strike seems not to have made a press conference yet to address why the strike was crucial, but rather made a tweet of the american flag earlier.

Both the President of Iran and their supreme leader Ali Khamenei have condemned the attack an have made comments suggesting a retaliation. A three day mourning has been ordered to be observed by Iranians.
