Flora Nwapa, one of Nigerian leading female authors ever and arguably the first female author in the country was born today on the 13th of January 1931. She was
referred to as the mother of modern day African literature. She was born in Imo state and comes
from a town Oguta in the state. She started her career as an Education officer in Calabar, shortly after
getting a diploma in Education from the university of Edinburgh in Scotland in the year 1958. She then took employment as a teacher at Queen's School in Enugu, where she taught English and
Geography from 1969 to 1971. From 1962 to 1967 she was the registrar of university of Lagos. After the Nigerian civil war of 1967–70, she accepted cabinet office as Minister of Health and Social
Welfare in East Central State (1970–71), and subsequently as Minister of Lands, Survey and Urban Development.
She began her writing career with her first book Efuru (1966) which was about a strong and
beautiful woman Efuru who falls in love with a poor farmer Adizua and runs away with him. After
her debut Efuru, she wrote Idu (1967), Never Again (1975), one is Enough (1981), and women are different (1986). She was also actively involved in the relief mission after the civil war in the east. She died on the 16th of October 1993.
