WASHING CERTAIN FABRICS - SILK

May 23, 2019
You thought I ran out of info, inspiration or just walked right a writers block isn't it? In yo face! I'm still here.
Anyway, back to my lovers. I'm so sorry I’ve been on a hiatus. I'm sure you've been waiting for me to tell you about a certain fabric and I've been away. Please don't hate me.

I'm back! Sorta. I want to launch into a whole sob story about why I've been MIA but I’d rather save you all the stories that touch and go straight to business.

Newbies, I suggest you check this out before going on. It's not necessary, but it's useful for a proper understanding of why this is being written in the first place.

Now that everyone is following, - I hope - let's go into today's business.

SILK CARE

You know that soft piece of clothing that’s basically shiny. It's most likely a scarf, blouse, night dress or maybe even sheets. Yes! That one. That's silk.
Here’s a few DON’Ts for silk:
  • Don't dry in direct sunlight - I'm sure many of us didn't know this and would most likely still proceed to ignore it after reading this. Well, I'll have you know that that's the reason your silk clothes get faded.
  • Don't wash with chlorine bleach - This damages the fibres of the fabric.
  • Don't tumble dry - You should know silk is very delicate and high temperatures not only shrink it, but can also damage it.
  • Don't use detergents that aren't mild or for delicates - Again, delicate little silk can't handle it.
  • Don't wash with heavy articles like clothing - Things like Jeans should be far away from silk during laundry.
Quite a lot of DON’Ts right? Well, here's a few DOs:
  • Do make sure to check the label for special care - Not all silk articles have them, but it's important to follow for those who do.
  • Do check for colourfastness - Some silk articles bleed their colours, others don't. You don't want to wash those that bleed together with others because we all know what a mess that can turn out to be. To check, dab the silk with a wet white cloth. If any colour leaks on to the white cloth, then you know it bleeds and needs what I call ’A private wash party’.
  • Do use a towel to soak up excess water after the washing and rinsing.
If the care label says ’Dry Clean’ a little self wash that's done properly and follows the rules above won't hurt but if it says ’Dry Clean Only’ then run your pretty little ass to the cleaners. Also, if you're hand washing, you don’t necessarily have to scrub the clothes between your hands or against each other. You could just soak for 3 to 5 minutes and then agitate the clothes (ie submerge and pull out the clothes repeatedly in the water) gently. That should remove any stain that isn't major.
There you have it.

WASHING CERTAIN FABRICS -LINEN

May 17, 2019
Wonderful day we’re having huh?
Well, I'm not exactly having a great day but I'm hoping you are so there won't be so much despair everywhere.
Anyway, before we go on, I really choose to believe that you have seen this. If you haven't, please do so before you go on because I'm diving straight into what we have for today. Thank you all for bearing with me.

LINEN CARE

Linen. Constantly wrinkled, rigid linen. I absolutely LOATHE linen. I’ve got no hard feelings about linen. I just hate how long I have to be at it when ironing because my mom barely ever takes anything to the dry cleaners. We do all our laundry ourselves which is why, asides the research, I have such knowledge about doing laundry.

Linen is usually what beddings - mostly duvets - are made of. There are wears such as shirts too made of linen. If you do your laundry yourself, do you know that one shirt you spend a relatively longer time ironing? Yes, that shirt is most likely linen. It wrinkles so much and is so ugly when it does although some people find a sort of aesthetic in it. We all view it differently. On the bright side, linen is very comfortable to wear and breathable so I guess that makes the million years spent ironing it kind of worth it.

Linen often comes in blends (with cotton, rayon and others) so this usually determines the way they're to be washed. Linen is very durable on its own, hence, following the care label is best. Some linen articles come with special instructions because of the blend so take note of that. Make sure to separate coloured articles from whites and all should be fine and dandy. If the label says ’dry-clean-only’ best whisk that piece of clothing to the cleaners unless of course, you're a risk taker and would like to see if you’d have any success doing it on your own. Because of its durability, I guess it's okay to take a few risks. Articles of clothing are best washed in the delicate setting or short cycle with cold water.

If the linen material is stained, you can try using club soda but NEVER use bleach on Linen. That’s a whole mess you don't want to deal with. Simple hairspray or rubbing alcohol could help sometimes but it’s honestly best to seek professional advice before employing any stain removal process.

Are drying, rather than machine drying, is best for linen materials. Don't wring linen to remove excess water because, well, we all know how wrinkly it gets. If you want to remove excess moisture, you could try rolling the material in a towel. Hang them on a padded hanger or clothes rack or you could just lay them flat.

There you have it. Everything I know that keeps my linen alive and a bit more info from dengarden.com
Until next time lovelies.

WASHING CERTAIN FABRICS -COTTON

May 16, 2019
In the last post, I told you all about how following laundry symbols might not be the best for you and we talked about Cashmere. If you missed it, please click this before proceeding. It would be better for both of us.
Now that you’ve clicked the link - I hope -, let's move on. There’s a lot of fabrics and materials out there and it was hard deciding which one to write on next so I just went with the easy and probably most popular of them all.

COTTON CARE

Did you know there’s a very high probability that what you're putting on is cotton? A lot of our clothing materials are made of cotton. Tops, shirts, Tees, blouses, and a lot more are majorly made of cotton. Since they’re the majority of our clothes, it's safe to say that people don't care much about the proper way of washing it.

”Hey I should probably wear this tomorrow but it's dirty. Meh, I’ll just toss it in the machine.” And so I do.

This is a very large percentage of us. We literally toss clothes made of cotton into the machine with very little care about how we should wash it to get the best out of it. Some of these cotton clothes don't even come with laundry symbols. So, we just wash.

This ’just’ washing cotton (full or part) actually causes shrinking. In actuality, here’s the proper way to do it.

The major cause of this shrinking is heat so you definitely want to cold wash. Remember I said you shouldn't always follow the care label. Well for cotton, you actually should. If the label indicates a dry-clean-only, then you should rush those clothes immediately to the cleaners. Other cotton clothes can safely be self-washed if you do it right and carefully. Rapid drying of the clothing articles also causes cotton fibres to shrink.

If you're machine drying, wash with cold water and on delicate. It's best dry on line rather than machine dryer to avoid shrinking. If you choose to hand wash, do it in warm water and delicate detergent then dry the way you would dry after machine washing.

You see, cotton isn't all that trouble. Comment what you do to keep your cotton in perfect shape for a long time.

Until next time, wash your clothes well.

WASHING CERTAIN FABRICS -CASHMERE

May 13, 2019
Different clothes are made of different materials. Majority of these materials come with labels and those labels usually indicate how those clothes are supposed to be washed using laundry symbols. The logical thing is to do as the label says. Right?
Actually, WRONG!

Now I'm not saying the manufacturers lie with the labels. They don't. But rather than give what the best method of washing is for the clothes, a lot of these labels mostly indicate whether or not the clothes are safe for washing in a particular way. By only following the 'safe' method and not the 'best' method, your  clothes face the danger of reducing in quality a lot faster.

For different clothes, there are different methods that are better than that of the label and laundry symbol. And over the next few posts, we'll be taking a look at all of them. In this post, we talk about CASHMERE.

CASHMERE CARE

Cashmere is the material a lot of our favourite sweaters are made of. Typically, the care label on a cashmere sweater says 'dry clean only' hence a lot of us tend to wash it machines. In actuality, when you wash a cashmere sweater by hand, over time, the sweater gets softer. Go for mild detergent or even baby shampoo when doing the washing; not just because of your hands -though that’s a really good side to it- but also because it's gentle on the material.

After washing and rinsing, you definitely want to press out the excess water but wringing is a very bad idea. Rather than wring the water out, place the sweater flat on a towel and reshape as it dries.
But it’s Cashmere! Won’t it take forever to dry?
Well, to speed up the drying process, it's best to have a large salad spinner at home. You could use that to spin off excess water.

Remember to always lay flat to dry and never hang. Hanging would cause dimples in the shoulder while the pull of gravity will distort the overall shape.

Try these hacks now and come back with your testimonies in the comments section.
